Mid-Year Admissions

As a selective education provider, entrance to our school is dependent upon a child sitting an entrance test and achieving above a minimum standard to be considered within the appropriate ability range. For entry to our year 7 cohort, this is done by sitting the 11+ entrance exam whilst your child is in year 6. Any students deemed to have achieved above the minimum qualifying score (MQS) but not offered a place for September entry will remain on a waiting list until the end of the Winter Term (December of the same year). After this time, we move to a mid-year admissions process where anybody who did not have the opportunity to sit the entrance exam can apply to be considered for any vacancies that arise in school throughout the academic year.

Parents who wish for their daughter to be considered for such a place should complete this In-Year Registration Form and send it to the admissions office at Queen Mary’s High School, either by post or email to admissions@qmhs.merciantrust.org.uk

In line with our Admission Arrangements in order to ascertain whether the child is of an academic standard commensurate with those already in the school, an entrance test must be taken.  Dependent upon the year group and point at which vacancies become available, children will either be tested on core subjects (English, Mathematics and Combined Science) or with a CAT4 Test. The type of test that your child will take will be made clear to you on any test invitation should a vacancy arise.

Once the registration form has been received, the Headteacher’s PA will make arrangements for testing to take place at school, should a vacancy be available. If there are no vacancies, your child will be added to a waiting list.

Please note we will only test candidates where a vacancy exists in that year group. Any applications submitted are only valid for the current academic year (unless otherwise stated) as we do not roll over waiting lists.

In years 7 – 11, we have a published Pupil Admission Number (PAN) of 150 per year group. We hold mid-year lists for the following year groups:

  • Year 7 – from the Spring Term
  • Year 8
  • Year 9
  • Year 10 – until the start of the Summer Term

Please note, due to the majority of our GCSE courses having a duration of 2 years or more, we cannot accept applications to our Year 11 cohort and as such, we do not operate a list for Year 11.

Applications for the mid-year waiting list for the academic year 2025/26 are now open. Applications should be completed on the current 25/26 pro-forma and sent to our Admissions Department. Should you have any questions, please email admissions@qmhs.merciantrust.org.uk
