Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging

Queen Mary’s High School welcomes a diverse school population of both students and staff. At Queen Mary’s High School, equality, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to who we are and how we work. We are committed to creating a school community in which every student is valued, respected and supported to achieve their full potential, regardless of background, identity or personal circumstance.

We believe that excellence and inclusion go hand in hand. High expectations apply to all, and difference is recognised as a core strength of our cohesive community, a strength that enriches learning, personal development and the life of our school. We, as a school community, believe that all people are of equal value and are entitled to equality of opportunity. We will not unlawfully discriminate on the grounds of the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010. We challenge prejudice and discrimination in all its forms so that all members of our school community feel safe and valued.

Queen Mary’s High School is committed to providing equal opportunity for all students and staff regardless of ethnic background, religion, gender or disability. In line with the Equality Act 2010, the school recognises the principle of protected characteristics and that it is against the law to discriminate against someone because of:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

As in many areas of school life, Queen Mary’s High School students take a lead in many areas of EDIB with a number of student societies and committees responsible for organising and leading events and celebrations in school such as:
Cultural Awareness Society (CAS)
Just Like Us group

Sixth Form Iftar committee
Peer Mentors
Anti Bullying Ambassadors

Mental health ambassadors
Wellbeing club
School council
Reflection Room volunteers
There are also regular activities and competitions to raise awareness of EDI matters. As a school community, we recognise and celebrate a broad range of religious and cultural dates. There is a calendar of celebratory events planned throughout the year which ensures students have the opportunities to experience and learn about the wide range of religious and cultural traditions represented in Great Britain today.

Our Whole School Culture Day (organised by Mrs Wilson and the CAS) committee is a highlight of the academic year. Students and staff celebrate their cultural background whilst finding out more about that of others. The school is always a vibrant place to be on that day as everyone is invited to wear an outfit that represents their cultural background.  There are also exciting displays of food, dancing and music to be enjoyed.
